Cognitive Framework – What’s going on in your mind
I had a recent conversation with a new employee in our startup hub. He was visibly concerned that he was not able to understand the job requirements and everything appeared so new. I asked him to recall his first experience in driving.
He said the following with regard to his driving experience
- Initially he was unsure
- Next he was aware that he did not have the skills but could learn through driving lessons
- Next he became aware that he had the skills but he was conscious when he was driving
- Now he is not even have to think and be conscious about driving; it comes to him naturally
This is best explained by this cognitive matrix
I asked him to relate to above driving experience to his work experience using the above framework. He was able to understand that he is now aware that he does not have the skill but can train to upskill. I explained to him that small children go through this phase during crawling – walking and running. He understood that where he was and where he needed to go. With this clarity, his concern and fear was gone and he said that he felt a lot better. He said he was ready to take on the challenges through learn and upskilling, in order to perform in his role.
All of us go through this process as we learn and upskill; just be aware in which quadrant you are in the cognitive matrix.
